R&B singer-songwriter and producer Ashanti was born Ashanti Shequoiya Douglas in NewYork in 1980. She cites Mary J. Blige and Ella Fitzgerald amongst her musical influences.
Ashanti started young towards her career in music, although she would have a few false starts before she began to provide vocals for other artist's records. In 2002 she found herself in the unique position of having collaborated on the No.1 ("Always On Time" by Ja Rule) and the No.2 ("What's Love?" by Fat Joe) singles on the Billboard Hot 100.
