Beginning in 1955, Chuck Berry served up a distinctive blend of blues, R&B, and country and western seasoned with a unique lyrical sense, and -- sorry, Elvis -- virtually defined the sound and vocabulary of early rock 'n' roll. Berry's signature guitar sound of double-stop phrasing was influenced by bluesman T-Bone Walker and Louis Jordan guitarist Carl Hogan. But Berry's unprecedented command of language -- his ability to write clever lyrics that utilized meter and rhythm -- owed little to anyone. THE CHESS BOX includes 71 tracks (six previously unreleased) on 6 LP's, featuring classic Chess recordings of "Maybellene," "Roll Over Beethoven," "Johnny B. Goode," and others. Also included is a healthy sampling of Berry's blues, including "Wee Wee Hours" (the B-side of "Maybellene"), the rarely heard '70s original, "Have Mercy Judge," and Guitar Slim's "The Things I Used to Do." Whether you're heading for outer space, a desert island, or a party on the patio, you must take some of his stuff with you.
