Basie has never, as far as I know, had a vibraphone in his orchestra; nor has Milt Jackson ever recorded with a Big jazz band. In 1975 I had Bags jam with Basie's small group at Montreux (Pablo #2310 750) and immediately knew how wonderful it would be to record the two together with the big band. For this project, Bags, Basie,and I chose a cross section of the great Basie showpieces from the past thirty years or so. The soloists are Basie and Bags. Each must have gotten inspiration from the other, and especially the band from both, because I think the play on this album is its best in years. At the end of the session, I suggested Bags do some small group things with the Basie rhythm section and the results were equally felicitous. On "Lena & Lenny", Sarah Vaughan, who was sitting in the studio as a spectator, got so enthused about the session that she sat in with the band; you can hear her with the reed section. The band and Bags cooked so much, that what began as a single album quickly, and I suppose, inevitably, turned into a double. If, therefore, you like this one, why not try Volume I.
