| Through the '80s and '90s, the Flamin' Groovies released a number of substandard, indifferent live albums. CALIFORNIA BORN AND BRED is definitely not one of these. Assembled with Norton Records' usual care and thoroughness, this collection of live and studio rarities from the late '60s and early '70s--when powerhouse singer Roy Loney and not British Invasion-obsessed guitarist Cyril Jordan was the group's central figure--shows that at their best, the Flamin' Groovies could shred every band in their general stylistic vicinity, including their more-lauded Bay Area compatriots Creedence Clearwater Revival. Heavy on the covers, as befits a classic bar band, this collection burns through good-rockin' covers of such proto-power-pop classics as "I Can't Explain," "Shakin' All Over" and, of course, "Louie Louie." One particularly way-cool find, the radio promo for the Groovies' self-released SUPERSNAZZ album, is also included. Essential for all Groovies fans.
