| Some so-called trance DJs like Sasha and Paul Oakenfold crossed over the masses in the late '90s. Not Jon the Dentist, though. His popularity skyrocketed, but he remained strictly a favorite with the eternally youthful rave crowd. This is because the Dentist's style of trance borderlines on hardcore that is so fast and relentless -- a far stretch from his more accessible so-called trance peers. And these same extreme characteristics that appeal to the raving crowd no doubt characterize the music on DAMN Trance, a representative mix that features a few of the Dentist's productions. From the get-go, these tracks will make your pulse race: the tempo is ridiculous, the beats hit hard and often, and there are no shortage of laser-like synth riffs. There are plenty of melodic moments, particularly when the songs feature sedate female vocals. But you really can't savor the melodies for more than a passing second before the harsher elements of the music overwhelm you again. Not for the light-hearted. More for the hardcore extremists. Definitely shows you why the Dentist garnered such a rabid following.
