Kelly, Paul - Spring & Fall (Audio CD - Nov. 6, 2012)

Kelly's first album in five years is a simple, but lovely song cycle, tracing the vicissitudes of a love relationship from initial passion to eventual loss and regret. It's a bittersweet work of subtle genius, sparely (but effectively) backed with a violin here, a plaintive harmonica there, against prevailing acoustic instrumentation. The album opens with a song borrowing words from poet John Donne ("To His Mistress Going to Bed") and gradually reveals the erosion of what was once a strong bond. Much like the recent work of Bob Dylan, Kelly's songs reveal the craftsmanship of a mature artist using wisdom to get his point across, not having to resort to the flashier music and lyrics of his past. "Spring and Fall" is worth hearing by anyone who admires well-crafted songs embodying authentic emotion and insight into the human condition.
