Luke Winslow - King Coming Tide (Audio CD - 3/26/2013)

The CD was recorded in New Orleans at Piety Street Studios and I really like the unfussy production by Luke and Earl Scioneaux III which lets the music speak for itself. There is some great Big Easy brass throughout from Ben Polcer on trumpet, Rick Trolsen on trombone and Chris Johnson, Bruce Brackman and Tom Saunders on saxes, while Cassidy Holden and Rich Levinson provide the rhythm section. The songs are a mixture of originals and traditional blues and folk like Fred McDowell's "Keep your lamp trimmed and burning" and Leadbelly's "Ella Speed" and are all of a similar high standard. My favourite tracks are probably the title track and the closing "I've got my mind set on you" which has the album's dirtiest guitar sound.
