In the late ’80s, Paul McCartney embarked on a series of writing sessions with Elvis Costello (some of those songs ended up on Costello’s "Spike," and others on this 1989 album). With his creative juices flowing, Paul crafted his finest album in many years, reaching #21 and earning his most ardent acclaim since early in the decade. His own "We Got Married" (guitar: David Gilmour), "Put It There" (string arrangement: George Martin), "Figure of Eight" and "This One" join his Costello co-writes "That Day Is Done," "Don’t Be Careless Love," "You Want Her Too" and the biggest of the three hits here, "My Brave Face." Now, "Flowers in the Dirt"—which earned a Grammy nomination and soared to #1 in the UK—returns in remastered form, expanded to two discs in the CD and vinyl special editions via nine Paul-and-Elvis original demos. You get all that in the deluxe edition, too, plus a whole lot more, starting with a third CD featuring nine more demos from 1988. Deluxe-edition owners also get a DVD with 10 music videos, the 1989 VHS documentary "Put It There" and a "making-of" film. The digital-download portion of the deluxe set unearths the previously unreleased cassette demos of "I Don’t Want to Confess," "Shallow Grave" and "Mistress and Maid" plus a bevy of B-sides, alternate mixes of "This One," "Figure of Eight," "Party Party," "Ou Est Le Soleil?" and more. All three deluxe-edition CDs also come with downloadable high-resolution audio. Arguably the most lavish element of the deluxe set: the print elements, starting with a 112-page hardcover book. Rounding out this big boy are a 32-page notebook of Paul’s original handwritten lyrics and notes, a catalog of Linda McCartney’s 1989 "Flowers in the Dirt" photo exhibition and a 64-page photo book of the music-video shoot for "The One."
