It took three years for The Pharcyde to follow up on their debut release, "Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde." Not that they didn t keep busy in that period with supporting slots for De La Soul and A Tribe Called Quest as well as a successful spot on Lollapalooza's 1994 tour. Of course J-Swift had parted ways with the group just before the conclusion of the Bizarre Ride sessions. Rather than try to out an out replace Swift, production on Labcabincalifornia was handled by the Pharcyde s own Bootie Brown, Fatlip and Slimkid3 along with contributions from Diamond D, M-Walk and very notably the work of a recent arrival in LA, Jay Dee aka J Dilla. The resulting project, Labcabincalifornia , maybe calmer than the group s debut but it s no less warped with stand out cuts like She Said, Drop, and Runnin . The lead single, Drop was supported by one of the best videos ever directed by Spike Jonez and along with the above mentioned singles propelled solid sales on Labcabincalifornia . Though the project didn t sell as well as their legendary debut, the release has secured it s own position in the pantheon of must have records. Since Trac Entertainment and Delicious Vinyl feel that we ve gotta kick something that means something an expanded triple disc release of Labcabincalifornia is here. Disc one features the original record from start to nish. Disc two features all instrumentals including the Jay Dee beats for Runnin and Drop as well as the instrumental version of his remix of She Said. The third disc compiles the remixes and B-Cydes including the Rae & Christian remix of Runnin and the (previously) B Cyde only cut, Emerald Buttery. The entire set is housed in a mini-box with magnet clasp with a book lled to the top with rarely seen photos, Pharcyde info and more.
