Few Hip-hop albums in this day and age can illicit memories of a time when the artist actually had something to say, not just for the sake of record sales or to promote some gangsta-wannabe image. This record is at the forefront of the hip-hop renaissance, and is truly a masterpiece that will hopefully make the rounds, like Jay-Z's freshman effort, reasonable doubt, as an album 'heavily slept on' upon it's initial release, only to eventually come to be revered as a hip-hop classic, a must have, top ten on many a purist's list of favorites. I was initially drawn in by the music video to 'break loose', the graphics, breakdancers, and beat itself bring you right into the middle of hip-hop's golden era, the early-to-mid 1990's when The Wu-tang clan, Biggie Smalls, Smiff'n'Wessun, Nas, Jay-Z, Common Sense and the like were putting out fresh music, and every weekend brought something new and exciting for the listener's enjoyment. The lyrics, beats, hooks and Rasheed Chappelle's smooth, syncopated flow combine symbiotically to give fans of the real hip-hop a finished product that is worth so much more then the sum of it's parts. This album will inevitably remain on my top-ten list of favorites for years to come, and I will be proud to share the joy I felt when first exposed with my children and eventually, their children.
