Their first time in New York, Austin-based Sons of Fathers, then a duo of Paul Cauthen and David Beck, didn’t know where they were going. The Harlem club they were playing was packed with people listening to a member of the pre-hip-hop poetry group the Last Poets. By the time they went on, only two people remained. One of the two apologized that everyone left and invited them back to his apartment to play music; they stayed for seven hours.“It was fun, man,” says Paul Cauthen, in a wide-brimmed hat that doesn’t seem to come off. “I was blown away.”
