Argue all you want, but soundtracks to contemporary Disney blockbusters just don't hold a candle to those of earlier classics, like "Mary Poppins" and "The Jungle Book." Sure, "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Lion King" boast isolated songs that are catchy and clever enough. Rarely, though, do they stand up on their own, à la standards like "A Spoonful of Sugar" and "The Bare Necessities." But the soundtrack to 1995's POCAHONTAS, beautiful and vivid as a Broadway musical, is filled with numbers that deserve classic status. There's the stirring centerpiece "Colors of the Wind," passionately delivered by stage luminary Judy Kuhn (which humbles Vanessa Williams's pallid pop-radio version). The lovely, flowing "Just Around the Riverbend," the rousing "The Virginia Company," and drama-rich "Savages," which sounds like an outtake from "West Side Story," also hold their own. Songwriters Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz had no comic relief to fall back on -- the film's crowd-pleasing animal sidekicks, a Disney movie tradition, don't even talk, much less sing. But the pair rises to the challenge of creating a soundtrack that's serious, yet still wholly engrossing, for kids as well as grown-ups.
