In a year featuring many stomp-and-clap folk and bluegrass bands, Twin Forks stands out with their incredible energy.Their self-titled debut E.P. is a rollicking effort with hardly a break, drawing from a dozen different traditions and styles to make a truly fun record.The group is fronted by Chris Carrabba, better known perhaps as the sad singer behind Dashboard Confessional during the early years of emo music. Twin Forks is a chance to play some different songs in the country, folk and bluegrass genres he grew up with, influencing his work with Dashboard before the sound moved towards rock, pop and punk.Carrabba stresses that he is part of the group, not a frontman or leader. The material is excellent. Recorded live, all five tracks could be singles or crowd favorites, but opener "Back to You" definitely stands out.Featuring a cascading chorus that begs you to sing along, "Back to You" has the lyrical charm of a Dashboard song - "whistle past the graveyard/even the dead deserve a song" - coupled with the stomp/clap sound that defines the E.P. The depth of Carrabba's previous writing may not be as evident, but the imagery and spirit is right there and it is still captivating.The other standout track is "Scraping Up the Pieces," which closes the E.P. A bouncing tune that benefits from the mandolin work of Suzie Zeldin, it is another showcase of clever lyrics and catchy chords. It's also probably the best example of the group's attempt to bring influences like Justin Townes Earle together with the pop/punk sound of Dashboard while staying honest to both. Overall, the E.P. is an excellent intro to the group and showcases their talents well. Fans of Carrabba's other work will find a lot to love, but newcomers will not feel left out, especially if they are into the modern Americana music scene.
